Vocational skills training remains one of the strongest building blocks for development; the most important and reliable investment any country can make. It is through vocational education that children are transformed into responsible citizens contributing to the development of the country in a sustainable manner. Vocational training in Uganda is less developed and yet it is the only sustainable way to development. The students from the poor mountain communities are denied this chance due to the very low income levels.
Our vocational skills programme for all aims at supporting those vulnerable persons by educating them to acquire hands-on skills in the fields of, hotel Management, tourism and tour guiding, pastry and baking, agriculture and food processing, hair dressing, crafts making, computer applications, repair and maintenance, carpentry and joinery, knitting, tailoring and garment cutting, welding and metal fabrication, Motor vehicle mechanics among others so as to acquire practical knowledge that will prepare them to be job creators
In line with the VOST programme, Rwenzori Vocational College with support from Aktion Minibrot development programme of KLJB Catholic Rural Youth Movement in the Archdiocese of Paderborn, GERMANY is implementing a 7 months Vocational Skills training in Kasese, Uganda.
The vocational skills project for all aims at supporting those vulnerable persons by training them to acquire hands-on skills to prepare them to be job creators and enhance their employability.
The project has attracted 120 trainees (women and youth) from the ages 15-35 years. 79% of the trainees are females and 21% males. 66% of the trainees are under tailoring and fashion design majority of whom are females, 25% are under cookery, pastry and baking and 8.3% of the trainees are under bar and liquid soap making. The trainees/beneficiaries were identified from the entire district with a focus on rural areas and slums.
The project started in December 2020 with the identification of beneficiaries and career guidance for the selected beneficiaries. The beneficiaries were recruited from the entire district with the help of community and church leaders.
. The response from the trainees and the trainers was very positive and the project had a good start and was progressing well until the closure of schools due to the surging Covid 19 infections. The second wave has hit hardest and the project activities have been suspended for 42 days with effect from 7.6.2021 in line with the Presidential directive.
